sacred in Cc (that's how the light gets in)

In 2024, I began experimenting with Carbon paper. It is a material that has historically been used to create multiple copies at the same time as the original document. (The email term "Cc" - meaning "carbon copy", comes from this use of Carbon).

I began copying photocopies of paintings using Carbon itself as a canvas, etching and scratching it gradually and removing the carbon until the image emerged. Only when light penetrates these lines and cracks does the image become visible.

I have copied existing paintings in the past as part of my practice. I am now attempting to reinterpret paintings using a medium for copying as a canvas. This method allows me to transform the original image into a new form, as light interacts with the carved lines and spaces. This creative process became an integral part of the concept of the work. It evolved into a meditative practice, creating mental space while literally allowing light to reveal a meticulously carved drawing.

Another interesting characteristic of Carbon is its fragility and impermanence. Sculpting this delicate material requires utmost care and concentration for the image to appear and radiate. This process transforms the artwork into both a light projection and a sculpture.

These sculpted drawings invite viewers to experience the delicate interplay of matter and light, revealing the profound stillness and energy found in fragility and impermanence.
